Introduction: The first years of life are extremely important for the child's development. Developmental psychology represents an approach to the goal of studying how psychological changes in children and adolescents. Therefore, it is a field of psychology that aims to explain how the changes with the development of their children and how these changes can be described and parts. Developmental Psychology is a comprehensive area that can be used to guide the educator by showing what skills, abilities, and limitations in each age group is in general, and how it helps to establish school programs and teachings that fit children, as well as in sports and leisure activities. Today, women are more focused on their careers; because of that, children are being institutionalized earlier. This early institutionalization is troubling, since it is often not possible to track the development of each age group in which the child is found, often leaving deficits to go unnoticed. Material and Methods: The Operational Portage Inventory (OPI) is a tool that allows an evaluation of the development of children from zero to six years old in five different areas: socialization, language, cognition, self-care and motor development. Studies by Prado et al. in 2012, uses of the OPI, with a group of 15 children institutionalized within a daycare center, aged between zero and two years, were evaluated. After the conclusion of the evaluation came the result that the children participating in the study presented lags in all areas of development, being more significant delays in language and self-care areas. With the use of IPO as a methodological tool for the evaluation of children who are in early childhood and are already institutionalized in a private day care center, this work aims to develop estimation projects focused on developmental areas of deficit found in each individual evaluated. Results: In what was studied, the children evaluated presented deficits in specific areas of knowledge. Nass areas of self-care, motor development and language were found flaws for the parameters measured by the OPI.
